Hello! This week we’re talking about shopping for clothes.
I’m not alone in feeling as if shopping for clothes can be a triggering and upsetting experience. Finding clothes that both feel good and look alright on my body in recovery sometimes feels like an insurmountable hurdle. But I’ve figured out a few tricks to make it easier.
Mainly, I remind myself that clothes are supposed to work for my body, not the other way around. Even though we’ve been taught by the fashion and diet industries that there’s such a thing as an “ideal” body, there isn’t. We’re all just bodies, walking around on this Earth for a limited time, doing our best. We have better things to do with our lives than suffer at the hands of a piece of clothing!
The practice this weekend is to consider how you shop for clothes. Do you feel triggered by clothing not fitting your body? How do you handle it? Consider what it would be like to make the clothes work for you rather than trying to make your body fit the clothes. What would help you choose clothes that feel good?
